Things to see in Naples
Take a walk from Capodimonte down to the heart of Naples, overground through Via Santa Teresa degli Scalzi, underground through the beautiful catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso.
The Archaeological Museum lies in a historical building and is home to an exquisite collection of artworks and archaeological finds, and it's one of the oldest museums in Europe.
More than three thousand valuable objects from the prehistoric age to late antiquity, the Farnese collection, and the third Ancient Egyptian collection in Italy for quality and relevance.
Not so far from the Archaeological Museum you will find the lush flora of the Botanical Gardens ('Real Orto Botanico') and its Paleobotanic and Ethnobotanical Museum.
Just a few minutes and you'll find yourself wandering through Naples old town center: a lively maze of alleys and ancient churches, from every age and every style.
The old town is one of the two originary cores of Naples, a kaleidoscopic experience listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Its peculiarity lies in the chessboard structure: three long westbound roads, crossing the old town in its entirety.
The most relevant spots are to be found along the 'Decumano Inferiore' (an East-West road according to the Ancient Roman city planning), also knows as Spaccanapoli: The Gesù Nuovo church and the Santa Chiara monastery are all here. On the 'Decumano Superiore' (North-South) you will have the chance to see the mysterious beauty of the Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco church and the monumental complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore, where you can see the ruins of the ancient market of Neapolis.
The Decumano Maggiore will take you to Naples Cathedral, where you can’t miss the Treasure of San Gennaro. A few minutes walk and you’ll be carried in the contemporary art of the MADRE contemporary art museum. For contemporary art fans, the art stations tour is a must-see: every Tuesday at 10.30 there aree free guided tours of the underground stations departing from Toledo station. All you need is a UnicoNapoli ticket (1.30€, sold at newsagents, tobacconists, ticket offices and vending machines).
